Summary

Sometimes we move forward believing that our plans and judgments are right. However, when unexpected difficulties arise, our faith and confidence can be shaken. Through the story of Paul, we are reminded that just as a smoothly started voyage can face a crisis due to a sudden storm, unexpected situations can occur in our lives as well. In such moments, we must humbly seek God's guidance and strive to maintain our faith.

And there is a certain island called Crete. As they set sail, do you not feel anything while looking at this scripture? Can it be expressed like this? There are no problems at all. A gentle south wind begins to blow, pushing the ship along. So, the majority of the people who had agreed to go to Phoenix were thinking, "We have achieved our purpose," believing that their thoughts were correct. And what do you think they talked about behind? They would probably gossip about Paul. They might say something like, "That Paul fellow wanted us to stay here, but look at this! The weather conditions are good, and there are no problems at all," right?

The part that deserves the most attention is "thinking they had achieved their purpose." Yes, believing that their judgment was correct, knowing that their plans were clear and certain, they thought that what they had in mind was coming to fruition as they sailed along the coastline. What a beautiful scene it is! No problems arise. Yes, they set off smoothly, but suddenly, verse 14 shows us that astonishing events begin to unfold. Read verse 14. Not long after, a tempestuous wind called Euroclydon arose from the island, and it was not long at all.

This is not a matter of taking a day or two or three. It happened very quickly. From the calm sea, a tempest called Euroclydon, a hurricane, arises. The name of this storm is recorded. The NIV Bible refers to it as a northeast wind, while other English translations refer to it as a hurricane. When we think of a storm, a hurricane is the most powerful, right? A storm of that magnitude hit them. It happened very quickly. Yes, it is astonishing. Can things turn upside down in such a brief moment? Can the situation become this complicated? Yes, not long after, a hurricane called Euroclydon arose from the island, and terrifying events began to unfold. Complicated matters started to occur. Things were getting out of hand.
