Summary

God's grace flows not from our worthiness but from the fullness of Christ. We are not meant to rest in the grace we have freely received, but to let it flow outward — to our neighbors and to our congregation. Day by day, we live upon grace poured out anew: grace upon grace.

Counting what was given
Today's PassageJohn 1:14-16

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Grace is not something we climbed up to earn; it is what He came down to pour out. Today, instead of counting what you have achieved, count what you have received.

Ask YourselfWhat happened this past week that you cannot honestly credit to your own effort?
Do This TodayWrite down three graces you received today in a note on your phone.
PrayerKeep me from forgetting that what I hold was given, not earned.

From His fullness
Today's PassageJohn 1:16

"From his fullness we have all received." The source of grace is not your diligence but Christ's fullness. The well has not run dry; you simply have not lowered the bucket.

Do This TodayReplace the first thing you do this morning with five minutes of prayer.
PrayerLet me come first to You, the well that never runs dry.

A gift, not a status
Today's PassageEphesians 2:8-9

Enjoy grace long enough and you begin to mistake it for something you deserve. The moment you do, gratitude leaves and comparison moves in. Today, remember again that your place is a gift.

Ask YourselfWhat have you been treating as ordinary that was in fact a gift?
Do This TodaySend a thank-you message to someone you have been taking for granted.
PrayerDo not let familiarity swallow my gratitude.

Where grace has passed through
Today's Passage2 Corinthians 12:9

Grace shows up more clearly in weakness than in strength. The very place you want to hide may be the place grace has entered most deeply.

Ask YourselfWhere do you feel weakest right now, and how has God been present there?
Do This TodayTell one trustworthy person about a weakness you have been hiding.
PrayerHelp me trust the grace that is made perfect in weakness.

Friday
A channel, not a container
Today's PassageMatthew 10:8

"Freely you have received; freely give." Grace held still goes stale; grace that flows stays clear. You feel the size of what you received in proportion to what you pass on.

Ask YourselfWho near you needs grace right now?
Do This TodayDo one concrete thing for that person today — a call, a meal, a hand.
PrayerLet the grace I received not stop with me.

Getting ready for tomorrow
Today's PassageLamentations 3:22-23

"They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." Looking back, some days this week went badly. But grace rests on His faithfulness, not on your report card. Tomorrow's worship is where you are filled again.

Ask YourselfWhat is the one thing you are most grateful to God for this week?
Do This TodayGo to bed ten minutes earlier tonight, and write down one thanksgiving to bring with you.

Beloved, today we stand together before the word of John 1:16 — "For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace." It is a short verse, yet within it lies a truth that runs through the whole of our faith. This morning, let us reflect on it together in three movements.

1
Grace freely received
Grace is a gift, not a wage
Ephesians 2:8

Grace freely received

When we look back over our journey of faith, the first truth we meet is that everything we have received is a free gift. Grace is not a reward we earned by doing well; it is love that flows from the very character of God.

Ephesians says it plainly: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God." Salvation is not our achievement but God's gift. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us, and so God proved His love toward us.

Therefore we have nothing to boast of — only something to be thankful for. That we opened our eyes this morning, that we can sit together and worship here, is all grace given freely.

Grace from His fullness
It flows from the fullness of Christ
John 1:16

Grace from His fullness

John confesses, "from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace." The source of grace is the inexhaustible fullness of Christ. Whatever our circumstances, the spring of grace never runs dry.

The wells of the world run dry when we draw from them. But the grace that flows from the fullness of Christ never runs dry, no matter how much we draw. Rather, it is poured out fresh each day — grace upon grace.

Does your life feel like a dry wilderness right now? Do not lose heart. The source of grace is not your situation but Christ Himself, and His fullness is unchanged today.

Grace passed on
We share the grace we've received
2 Corinthians 9:8

Grace passed on

Grace received is not to be stored, but to be passed on. God makes all grace abound to us so that we may abound in every good work.

The Jordan, which flows onward to the sea, is alive; but the Dead Sea, which keeps and never gives, is lifeless. So it is with grace. Grace only received and never shared grows stagnant. But grace passed on grows richer still.

The grace we receive today is the beginning of grace that will reach someone tomorrow. This week, let the grace you have received flow to one person. Let us live our days upon grace, grace upon grace. Amen.

Key Points

  • Grace is God's free gift, never earned by our own merit.
  • All grace flows from the fullness of Christ.
  • Grace received grows richer when shared — grace upon grace.

Discussion Questions

  1. What grace did I freely receive this week?
  2. To whom, and how, can I let that grace flow?
  3. When have I mistaken grace for something I 'deserved'?
  4. Do I have a daily habit of asking for fresh grace?
