Today's sermon explains how difficult it is to return to everyday life after a war, using the story of Odysseus and the return of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh. It emphasizes that even after victory in war, a new battle awaits in daily life, and to overcome this, one must follow God's commands, stay close to God, and serve only Him. What difficulties did Odysseus face after the war?
Odysseus faced obstacles in daily life during his journey home after the war.
Recently, the movie Odyssey, directed by the controversial director of the CRISPR debate, has gained immense popularity worldwide. This war is set against the backdrop of a war that lasted for a staggering 10 years. Odysseus faced great hardships during the 10 years of the Trojan War. However, the beginning of this war does not start with the 10 years of the Trojan War but rather from the journey back home after the war. The message of this movie seems clear: while the 10 years of war were difficult, the precious journey home is even more challenging. It seems to convey that living an ordinary life is harder than war itself.
As Odysseus ascends this precious path, he encounters numerous obstacles: storms, cyclopean giants, the witch Circe, the sirens who captivate the hearts of men, and even the monsters that create everything. When fighting in battle, he could clearly identify his enemies. However, the foes he met on his journey home were not so clearly defined. Sometimes they approached him in fear, sometimes in pleasure, and at other times in forgetfulness. After struggling to reach home, it was not the end; during his absence, his country and home had fallen into chaos. Thus, Odysseus once again risks his life to wage war to protect his daily life. The message of this movie is clear: winning a war is difficult, but returning home peacefully and living daily life is also a challenging battle.
Today's scripture records the story of two and a half tribes in a situation similar to that of Odysseus. It tells of the precious journey of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh. The passage describes their return to their homeland after completing all wars for seven and a half years. They are literally returning home with gold. They are depicted as returning home in fine garments, having succeeded. The image of these two and a half tribes reflects this perfectly.
