Summary

Jesus intentionally went to meet the Samaritan woman to fill her dry soul. Through her conversation with Jesus, she reflected on her past and present, and Jesus told her that He would give her living water, which is the water of eternal life. This living water has the power to revive our souls through the Holy Spirit and to establish us as true worshipers. We can find true satisfaction and rest through Jesus, and we should become worshipers who approach God in spirit and truth.

Amen. Last week, we looked at the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, where we focused on Jesus being lifted high on the cross, and we examined the necessity of being renewed daily by water and the Spirit. Today, the scene shifts. Jesus travels through Judea and enters the region of Samaria. There, He intentionally meets a woman who is living a dry life, hiding her sins and shame. Jesus comforts her thirsty soul and opens the way to the true place of worship. The woman who met Jesus goes back to her town to share the gospel and leads the people to Jesus. Those who come to Jesus confess with one voice, "We have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world." They recognized that Jesus is the Savior of the world. Now, holding this confession in our hearts, we will examine the conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman today. Through this message, I want us to see that Jesus not only gives us living water but also establishes us as true worshipers who have received that living water. I pray that today will be a time to deeply experience the good Jesus who fills the thirst of our souls in the name of the Lord.

The Conversation Between Jesus and the Samaritan Woman

Now, Jesus leaves Jerusalem and heads to His hometown in Galilee. You know, right? Jerusalem is in the south, and Galilee is in the north. Looking at this map, you can see that He must pass through Samaria. That is the most direct and quickest route. However, at that time, there was a long-standing conflict and religious hostility between Jews and Samaritans. Therefore, devout Jews would often take a long detour to avoid passing through Samaria. But in verse 4 of our text, it is recorded, "He had to pass through Samaria." The expression "had to" indicates a necessity, meaning it had to happen. This is a divine necessity that reflects God's will and plan, often used in Scripture to express a determination that God must fulfill. The fact that Jesus passed through Samaria had a special reason within God's will. What do you think that reason is? It was to meet a thirsty soul, the Samaritan woman, in a village of Samaria.

Now, Jesus and His disciples arrive in a place called Sychar in Samaria. It was about 6 o'clock in the Jewish time, which translates to noon today, the hottest time of the day. Moreover, Jesus and His disciples had been walking for six hours since early morning, so they were very tired and weary. Thus, in verse 6, it says that Jesus, being tired from the journey, sat down by the well. On the surface, it seems that Jesus is sitting by the well because He is tired. However, John does not simply describe this scene as a moment of rest for Jesus. Jesus intentionally went there to meet the woman, and He sat by the well for that encounter. Finally, the woman Jesus was waiting for comes to the well. Jesus sees her and says, "Give me a drink." When Jesus asks the woman for water, she is surprised and responds, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" Here, there are a few things we need to consider.
